Uczniowie szkoły
Blibala General secondary and preparatory School

Bilbala is a place in the region of Amhara in Ethiopia, located 30 km North West of Lalibela, one of Ethiopia's holiest cities. The village is situaded in a poor area in Lasta Mountains. It is not a touristic place where foreigners often reach. Wonderful mountains and the rock-hewn monolithic church of Saint George are the main attractions. Unfortuately the high school in Bilbala is at risk of closure because of unfunded costs.

The Ethiopian school system offers middles school, or lower secondary schools, which last for four years. Lower secondary school covers the first four years of the six year complete secondary education program. Students are generally ages 13 - 16. There are two stages of high schools. Upper secondary education begins at age 17 and lasts for two years. A vocational stream is also offered and lasts 2 or 3 years in the fields of teacher training, commerce, technology, agriculture, and military training..

There are both middle and high school in Bilbala. But the high school does not meet the standards of the system- at least one educational classroom for 40 students, three lab, two libraries and an IT classroom with 120 computers..

In Bilbala there is one classroom for 69 students, one lab, one library and an IT classroom with 12 computers.

The main reason for the situation is a lack of proper buildings which has a direct and negative effect on the quality of education..

In 2009 local people tried to solve the problem. There was a plan to build the second educational classroom, labs, a library and an IT classroom. The cost estimate showed that 2,5 millions of Ethiopian birrs were needed (it is more less 92 000 USD). To collect the amount of money the staff did their best to activate local community. Unfortunately it realized that the challange was beyond their power that is why, the renovation has not been started yet.

The lack of proper building may cause the necessity of commuting to school in Lalibeli, 30km there. Taking into consideration the Ethiopian reality the situation might limit a chance for better life for many young people.

The school in Bilbala has used shift system. There are 4 groups of students in 9-12 levels.

As always money is needful since it is difficult to send building materials to Ethiopia. High transportation costs would go beyond the value of aid.

I often travel to Ethiopia so I am able to transport small items in a hand baggage e.g functional laptops are needed.
